A Tale of Three Caramels

For over 60 years, Daffy Apple has been famous the caramel on our caramel apples.  Recently, though, we’ve been on a mission to fill a gap in the market for a cleaner label caramel.  What we found is that there are some different needs for different companies, wholesalers, and individual customers.  So we came up with three different caramels, Daffy Farms All Natural Baker’s Caramel, Daffy Farms All Natural Dipping Caramel, and Daffy Farms Dipping Caramel with Butter.  All three caramels are now available for purchase on the our website, as well as our Daffy Apple Traditional Daffy Apple Dipping Caramel and Daffy Apple Red Candy Dipping Caramel, and each has a slightly different usage and ingredient profile, so that hopefully we have a caramel to fit your specific needs!

Daffy Farms All Natural Baker’s Caramel All Natural Baker's

Daffy Farms All Natural Baker’s Caramel contains non-GMO corn syrup, no artificial flavors or colors or preservatives, and is perfect for baking applications, from brownies to tarts to a topping and filling for anything you’d find in a bakery case!

Daffy Farms Dipping Caramel with Butter Dipping with Butter

Daffy Farms Dipping Caramel with Butter also features no artificial flavors or colors or preservatives like our all natural caramels, but in a more economical version than our non-GMO caramels.  It has the same hold power and homemade caramel taste as our original recipe caramels.  It is perfect for dipping caramel apples, marshmallows, pretzels and other desserts, it also works well in and on baked goods!

They’re here! And they’re beautiful!!

CAM01114-UseThe transition is almost complete!  The first batch of Daffy Apple Traditional Dipping Caramel in our new Daffy Farms branded tubs is sealed and cooling.  It’s the same recipe we’ve used for Daffy Apple Caramel Apples for over 60 years, the packaging just has a fresh new look!

Did you know . . .

CAM00751“The practice of coating fruit in sugar syrup dates to ancient times.  Honey and sugar were used as preserving agents.  Food historians generally agree that toffee apples (aka taffy apples, caramel candied apples, candy apples, lollipop apples) probably date to the late 19th century, although difficult to prove in print.  Both toffee and caramel are traced to the early decades of the 18th century. Inexpensive toffee/caramels became available by the end of the 19th century. Culinary evidence confirms a variety of recipes, from hard colored sugar to soft chewy caramel coating.”

Q&A Tuesday: When are Daffy Apple Petite Caramel Apples in season?

Daffy Apple Petite Caramel Apples are produced from late August until early December. Local customers in the Denver Metro Area may contact us to discuss order pick-up starting in August. We will not ship Daffy Apple Petite Caramel Apples until late September due to temperatures and the perishable nature of caramel apples. Please review the Petite Caramel Apple Ordering Deadlines & Information page for further information about shipping dates and timelines. We also produce a limited number of Daffy Apple Petite Caramel Apples in April each year, which is the perfect time to try a Petite Caramel Apple Sample Pack before ordering a larger quantity for a fall event!

Sprinkle Apples

DIY: Burlap, Lace & Jute

Rustic – romantic – traditional – Daffy Apple Petite Caramel Apples may be the perfect fall favor!  And there is nothing better than a touch of burlap, lace, or jute to fit the theme.

We started with a Petite Caramel Apple with Crunch, a Clear Cellophane Bag, and piece of burlap.  Our burlap came in a bundle for $2.99 and we were able to cut approximately 10 pieces from the bundle, which comes out to around 30 cents per piece of burlap.

Burlap-Use-12

We simply tied the burlap around the stick and trimmed the ends a bit.

Lace also adds a fantastic classic, vintage vibe.  We set out looking for something more, lace-y, and ended up with this beautiful roll of crocheted white cotton.

Burlap-Use-14

We cut a piece and tied it on.  That’s it!  This roll of crocheted lace had 9 feet on it for $2.99.  Depending on how long you wish for the tails on the ribbon to be once tied, we found we could cut anywhere from 10 to 15 pieces at a price of 30 cents to 20 cents per piece.

Now jute!  Jute very quickly became the most popular idea for this post and it is by far the most economical.  We purchased a roll of 243 feet of natural brown jute for $2.99 and used nowhere near a foot to tie the bow in the photo below.  It would be very easy to cut 250 pieces from the roll, at a cost of only a couple of cents per jute bow.
